From $100 to $180 per m², supplied and laid, as a guide until the site is measured.
An alfresco slab has the hardest audience of any concrete on the block: bare feet, dinner guests, furniture and the back door, all within a metre of the house wall. On Boroondara’s rebuilt and extended period homes it also has to negotiate what is already there: decking off the new living room, original paving, established trees, and a boundary fence closer than any concrete truck would like.
Working to the house, not against it
The setout starts at the door threshold and works outward. Levels are matched where the slab meets timber or paving, the fall is engineered away from the wall at a grade you never notice, and where the yard runs back at the house, a grated drain becomes part of the pour rather than an afterthought. Underneath, the clay gets the same respect as under a driveway: compaction, membrane where conditions call for it, and detailing that keeps the slab edge clear of established root zones. The full build-up is on the specification page.
Coloured and exposed finishes for outdoor living
Exposed aggregate is the standout alfresco surface: the stone grips when wet, hides leaf stains, and ties into an exposed aggregate driveway or path at the front so the block reads as one build. Coloured concrete brings the slab into the palette of the house, with full depth oxide colour that cannot wear off: bone and sandstone tones sit against red brick and weatherboard, charcoal frames a rendered extension, and a mid grey stays cooler underfoot than a dark slab in summer. A broom finished plain slab does the same structural job for less.
What it costs
Patio rates run $100 to $180 per square metre by finish. Worked examples by size and surface are in the cost guide, and the calculator prices your dimensions immediately. Sharing the pour date with a driveway, paths or a garage slab spreads the mobilisation cost across the jobs, and old paving comes out through removal and replacement at $35 per m².
