Most calls start with concrete that has failed: a driveway cracked along the tyre tracks, a side path lifted over roots, a patio dropped away from the house, or the brick paving a previous decade thought would last. Pulling the surface off and pouring a new one over the same ground repeats the failure on a schedule. The point of doing removal and replacement as one trade is that the cause gets fixed while the ground is open.

How the job runs

The perimeter is saw cut first, at the boundary and wherever the new work meets anything staying, original paths and bluestone edges included. The old surface comes out and goes straight onto the truck. Then the actual repair happens: on Boroondara’s clay the usual culprits are an uncompacted base, water tracking under the slab, or roots, and each is corrected before a barrow of new concrete arrives. The replacement is poured to the published specification, in plain, coloured or exposed aggregate finish.

One trade, one accountable quote

Split the work between a demolition contractor and a concreter and the gap between them is where budgets die: the demo crew leaves, the concreter discovers the base, and the variation is yours. Here the cut, the break-out, the cartage, the base correction and the new surface sit on a single written quote, priced by people who knew what they would find under the old slab because they took it out.

What it costs

The removal component is $35 per square metre on top of the new surface, disposal included. In whole-job terms that makes a replacement driveway $130 to $220 per m² by finish, with paths landing at $125 to $165 all in and patios at $135 to $215. What does removal and replacement cost?

Add $35 per square metre to the rate of the new surface and you have the whole job. A replacement driveway in plain concrete works out from about $130 per m², and at the exposed aggregate end around $220. Prices are guides until the site is measured; the written quote that follows does not change.

Can you resurface old concrete instead?

Occasionally, where the base under it is genuinely sound and only the surface has gone. That is rarer than people hope. Concrete that looks tired is usually moving, and any overlay follows the movement within a season or two. The site measure settles which case yours is, and you get a straight answer.

What happens with tree roots?

The root that lifted the old slab gets addressed at the edge, and the new work goes over a deeper base with heavier mesh in that zone. Boroondara's street trees are protected, so nothing on a nature strip is touched without the council, and near a significant garden tree the slab is detailed around the root zone rather than through it.

Where does the old concrete go?

To a recycler for crushing into road base, not to landfill. Cartage and tipping are inside the $35 rate, and the block is left clear at the end of the break-out, not stockpiled for later.
