Most calls start with concrete that has failed: a driveway cracked along the tyre tracks, a side path lifted over roots, a patio dropped away from the house, or the brick paving a previous decade thought would last. Patching moves the problem sideways. Replacement fixes the reason it failed, because the fault is almost never in the concrete; it is in what is underneath.

The job, start to finish

Saw cut at the boundary and at any joins with surfaces staying, including original paths and bluestone edges that are being kept.
Break out and load the old concrete, pavers or asphalt. Disposal is included in the rate.
Fix the cause. On Boroondara’s clay that is usually a poor base, water getting under the slab, or roots, so the base is rebuilt and compacted and the drainage corrected before anything is poured.
New steel, new pour, in plain, coloured or exposed aggregate, to the build-up on the specification page.

One number, not two trades

Removal priced separately from the new pour is how replacement jobs blow out: the demolition contractor leaves, the concreter finds the base is worse than quoted, and the variation lands on you. Site measure and fixed quote

Dimensions, fall, access and drainage are assessed on site, along with any permit the council requires. The written quote is fixed.

Preparation and pour

Existing surface removed and the area prepped, with base material brought in where needed. Steel laid, council inspection at the crossover where one applies, then the pour. Most residential jobs are one to two days on site.

Cure and seal

Vehicles off for seven days. Exposed aggregate is sealed after the concrete has cured.

What does removal and replacement cost?

Removal and disposal adds $35 per square metre to the rate for the new surface. A replacement plain driveway therefore starts around $130 per m² all in, and exposed aggregate replacement runs up to about $220. Prices may vary with site conditions and variations; the written quote after a site measure is fixed.

Can you resurface old concrete instead?

If the base is sound and the cracks are only in the surface, sometimes. But most concrete that looks bad is moving underneath, and an overlay cracks in the same places within a year or two. You are told honestly at the site measure which one you are looking at.

What happens with tree roots?

Roots are cut back at the slab edge and the new concrete goes over a thicker base with extra mesh. Boroondara's street trees are protected, so where a nature strip tree is involved, the council is consulted before any roots are touched, and the slab edge near a significant garden tree is detailed around the root zone.

Where does the old concrete go?

Loaded out and taken to a recycler, where it is crushed for reuse as road base. Disposal is included in the removal rate, and the site is left clear, not stockpiled.
