A path carries less load than a driveway and fails sooner anyway, because path concrete was always poured thin, and it hugs the fence line where nobody ever compacted anything. On a Boroondara block the side path is also the working corridor of the house, the one route from the street to the back yard, so when it lifts over roots or ponds against the wall it is felt every day.

The strip down the side of the house

The classic job in Camberwell, Hawthorn and Surrey Hills is the side strip on a period block: a narrow run between the house and the fence, cracked into plates, lifting at the joints and draining the wrong way. The old path comes out, the base is compacted, and the new path goes down at 75mm, thickening to 100mm at any point a vehicle crosses, with the fall worked away from the wall. Where the gap is too tight for a barrow, the concrete is pumped, and that is priced in the written quote rather than discovered on the day. Shared access between two homes is set out and agreed with both owners in writing first.

Front paths and porches

A front path through an established garden is as much setting out as concreting: it has to meet the porch and the gate at the right levels, clear mature root zones, and sit against original tiles or bluestone edges cleanly. Porch slabs and steps are formed to a safe rise and tread and finished to match the path. Broom finished plain concrete is the economical standard; coloured and exposed aggregate carry the driveway finish through so the whole frontage reads as one build.

How much does a concrete path cost?

Can you work in a gap under a metre wide?

Yes. Side access on Boroondara's period blocks is often under a metre between the house wall and the fence, too tight for a barrow. Where that is the case the concrete is pumped in with a line pump, and obstacles like gas meters, downpipes and tree roots are formed around rather than boxed in.

How thick is a concrete path?

75mm is the working minimum, rising to 100mm wherever a vehicle tracks across, with mesh added when the ground or the use demands it. The fall always carries water off the path and away from the house wall.

Can the path match my existing driveway or front path?

Yes. Plain, broom finished, coloured or exposed aggregate can carry through so the frontage reads as one job, and where an original path is staying, the new work is poured to a clean joint line so the change reads as deliberate rather than as a patch.
